The reason: Only two teaching hospitals – central government-run Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry and Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGME&R) as well as SSKM Hospital run by West Bengal government in Kolkata-have been included in the list of BRICS countries’ healthcare facilities.

BRICS is a forum for economic cooperation among countries like Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

While addressing in the inaugural programme of the extended building ‘Ananyo’ of the Woodburn ward on Tuesday Miss Banerjee said: “It’s a great historic achievement of the IPGME&R (SSKM) Hospital because it has been included in the list of the BRICS network. Only two hospitals SSKM and JIPMER in Puducherry in the country have achieved this international recognition in healthcare.
“I am announcing a fund of Rs 10 lakh to the SSKM for a get-together programme. You celebrate and enjoy the achievement. It’s a small contribution from us,” she said.
